Personalized Cannabis Treatment Coming to a Pharmacy Near You

The recent cannabis revolution began many years ago with the realization that medical treatment with cannabis produced positive results. The legalization of medical cannabis paved the way for the legalization of recreational use cannabis which is gaining traction across North America and around the world.

Another benefit of legalization is we now live in an environment where more research can be conducted on this miraculous plant. Today, much of the cannabis related research is focused on classifying the different elements of the plant including cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids and relating their effect on specific physical symptoms and illnesses.

As science gains a greater understanding and completes the mapping of all of the different elements within the complex cannabis plant, there is a greater emphasis to develop cannabis strains with concentrations of cannabinoids and terpenes identified to produce the desired and more accurate medical benefits.

The endocannabinoid system plays an important role within the human body and includes receptors CB1 and CB2 which are the gateways for the cannabinoids to enter the body. When using cannabis these receptors change the chemistry of the human body. When this change in blood chemistry is compared to the history of cannabis use by the patient (good and bad), a correlation of symptoms and blood chemistry can be made to cannabis strains and products.

Another fascinating aspect of cannabis and our endocannabinoid system is the Entourage Effect, a term coined by S. Ben-Shabaat and Raphael Mechoulam in 1998 to represent the biological synergy of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids when used for treatment. Researchers are studying how the human body reacts differently to the full spectrum of active ingredients in cannabis.

By introducing machine learning algorithms, studying neural networks mechanisms, and tracking blood chemistry while capturing information on body type and other patient attributes, more accurate correlations and data insights can be made for unique cannabis strains and products according to the patient’s profile. Personalized cannabis treatment is becoming a reality and it can only lead to better outcomes for patients using cannabis.

GCAC is playing a key role in the introduction of advanced technology to the cannabis industry. The prognosis is great as there is an opportunity to better correlate the cannabis strain and product to the individual patient for superior patient outcomes and more personalized treatments.
