Earth Day Solutions for the Cannabis Industry

After the high of 420 (April 20th), the industry two days later looks in the mirror at Earth Day on April 22 and the sobering contradictions of an eco-system that can have a negative impact on Mother Earth.  The industry creates 8 pounds of waste per every one pound of product that is packaged and sold.  In addition, every new seedling is placed in new pre-packaged soil to avoid any pesticides, grown indoors for security and climate purposes, changes the PH levels of water runoff, and then packaged in plastic for sale to the consumer.

In fairness to cultivators, it is regulatory required for security purposes versus growing in the great outdoors.  Growing in a refurbished warehouse is just not as efficient as growing outdoors.  Plastics remain the popular choice in packaging and vaping while the adoption of hemp-derived packaging has been slowed by regulations and adequate infrastructure.

Here are some ideas on how we start moving in a greener direction that meets the best interest of the Planet.

  • If a grower is able to use a bio-char process and replenish their soil, the cultivator could be eligible for carbon offset credits.  This saves diversion to a landfill due to the fibrous nature of the stalks.
  • UV lights for indoor growers can save money on their electric bills.  In addition, renewable energy sources can help reduce impact.
  • Packaging waste can be taken back and hopefully reused and if not appropriately recycled.

At clearESG.app, we have created a resource network of third-party verifiers and consultants that can assist a company with its sustainable journey.  This network does cost to engage but we feel the ROI for the business will pay for itself in awareness and increased customer sales using our ESG (Environment, Social & Governance) technology.

Here are some examples of certifications you will be able to share with your customers using our blockchain technology and a simple QR code that shares your story as a sustainable business partner.
